Evolution of The Most Popular Sedan Hyundai Verna

Hyundai Verna was first launched in India in 2006 and in the global market Hyundai Verna has several names, From America and China it is known as Accent. The Korean Automaker Hyundai will launching soon its next gen Verna that will compete with Honda City, Skoda Slavia and Volkswagen Virtus.

2006 – Hyundai Verna 

In 2006 Hyundai launched its Verna when the Santro and Accent were already performing well in the Indian market. The new Hyundai Verna offers two engine options – 1.6 L petrol and 1.5 L diesel engine. A 1.6 L petrol engine generates a maximum power of 103 bhp and a peak torque of 146 Nm. And the 1.5 L diesel engine produces 109 bhp of maximum power and a peak torque of 235 Nm.

Hyundai Verna strongest rival Honda City was available in only petrol engine while the Hyundai Verna was available in petrol as well as diesel. This is the plus point for the Hyundai Verna at that time the diesel price is low as compared to petrol. So people choose diesel vehicles over petrol vehicles and in just 15 days of launch, the Verna surpassed 5,000 units.

2010 – Hyundai Verna Transform

 In 2010, Hyundai launched the first facelift of Verna and it was named Hyundai Verna Transformed. The same engine was offered in this facelift but the body design was changed. It gets new headlamps, indicators on ORVMs and the front grille was changed. At that time, Verna attained a top speed of 176 kmph and gave a mileage of 15 kmpl in city and 22 kmpl on highway.

The new facelift Verna had a ground clearance of 170 mm and a large 45 litre fuel tank. This time Hyundai add some more features in Verna like power steering, AC, rear defogger, Steering adjustment, fog lamps, front power windows and electric ORVMs.

2011 – Second Generation Verna

The Second Generation Hyundai Verna is the only diesel automatic option in the segment and it becomes the most powerful sedan in the segment. Hyundai adopted the fluidic design in Verna and the new Verna named Fluidic Verna. Hyundai now offers three engine options in its second gen Verna – 1.4 L petrol, 1.4 L diesel, 1.6 L petrol and 1.6 L diesel. The 1.4 L petrol and diesel engine generates 103 bhp and 86 bhp of power respectively. The 1.6 L petrol and diesel engine generate 119 bhp and 124 bhp of power respectively.

This time Verna looks more modern than both of its predecessors. Hyundai Verna had all the features that every car owner wanted including push engine start, six airbags, automatic climate control, wheel covers, and leather upholstery. 

2015 – Hyundai Verna 4S

Again in 2015, Hyundai launched its Verna facelift and Hyundai called it Verna 4S. Where the S stands for Style, Safety, Sophistication and Speed. This time it gets a larger front grille, new shape fog lamps that make it more aggressive. 

From inside, it looks like its predecessor Hyundai updated its audio system and added a Ergo Lever that allows the rear passenger seat forward to give the legroom. Now it looks more premium and it offers features like steering controls, alloy wheels, keyless entry, ABS and rear view camera.

2017 – Third Generation Verna

Hyundai launched its new look Verna on 22 August, 2017. After two months of launch, Verna crossed 20,000 bookings and 1,50,000 enquiries in India. This time the Korean automaker used the K2 platform which was better than its predecessors and it reduced the level of NVH. The next gen Verna is 65 mm longer and 29 mm wider than the previous gen model.

The next gen Verna gets hexagonal front grille, projector fog lamp, chrome door handles and Daytime running LED lights. Under the hood, This sedan is powered by two engines – 1.6 L Dual VTVT Petrol and 1.6 L U2 CRDi VGT Diesel engine. Both the engines were paired with 6 speed manual and 6 speed automatic transmission. Verna offers a smart infotainment system, electric sunroof, ventilated seats and updated sound system.

2020 Hyundai Verna 

In 2020, Verna gets a facelift with a new frameless dark chrome grille that makes it more premium and sporty. At this time, Verna comes with a BS6 compliant petrol and diesel engine. Under the hood, Verna debuted its 1.0 L turbo engine with 118 horsepower and 172 Nm of torque. Hyundai used the fluidic design on the new facelift. From the front, new projector headlamps and LED DRL make it a sporty sedan. 

The new turbo variant comes with gloss black finish in the front grille, shark fin antenna and twin tip exhaust. 2020 Verna gets black and beige dual tone interior with 8 inch infotainment system, ventilated front seats, cruise control, wireless phone charger, paddle shifter and auto dimming IRVMs. Hyundai Verna is the ultimate sedan for your family on a long trip.

2023 – Next-Gen Verna

In this year, Hyundai will launching soon its next-gen Verna with new looks and more premium features. The all-new Verna is now available in Petrol engine only. No more diesel engine! Next-Gen Verna is available in 2 engine options – A 1.5 litre turbo petrol engine and a 1.5 litre naturally aspirated engine.

From the front, it gets a huge trapezoidal grille, split headlamps with LED bar stretching across the front fascia. At the rear, tail lamps are connected with a LED light bar. In terms of features, Now Verna gets ADAS, 10.25 inch touchscreen, adaptive cruise control, front ventilated seats and digital instrument cluster. Hyundai has started the booking of Next-Gen Verna at Rs 25,000 and it will officially launch on March 21 at around Rs 10.25 lakh. When it launched it got rivals like the upcoming Honda City Facelift, Volkswagen Virtus and Skoda Slavia.
